Producing World Changing Licensed Counselors

My Philosophy

Why is Clinical Supervision Important?

Are you ready to change the world?

As a licensed professional counselor, you will hold the keys to changing someone's world by helping them reach their ultimate life goals. You have worked hard in graduate school and visualized what kind of therapist you want to be. You have thought about your ideal therapeutic environment to work with clients, whether it is in an agency or private practice. In order for you to get out there and change the world through hearts and minds, you will need support.

Are you?

  • Experiencing the transition between graduation and licensure as an LGPC?

  • Looking for the right Licensed Professional Counselor to provide educationally based, ethical, culturally competent and collaborative clinical supervision to guide you toward licensure?

  • Transitioning in to the field of mental health as your second career and looking for experienced guidance?

Supervision is a necessary step in helping you develop your skills and expertise as a therapist. Aside from supervision being a state requirement for licensure, I have a personal and professional interest in witnessing emerging professional’s blossom into empathetic and exemplary counselors!

Supervision Style & Experience

My supervisory style is a mix of clinical, supportive and cultural competence.

Clinical: I provide research and experientially based approach to training emerging licensed counselors. Text books and research articles provide a wonderful foundation for mental health work. However, providing experienced support helps emerging licensed counselors transition from effective to exemplary!

Supportive: I provide a person-centered approach to supervision. When an emerging licensed therapist feels conflicted, insecure or “stuck”, it can manifest in their counseling sessions. To avoid transference and countertransference, the right amount of support is needed to help the counselor heal so he/she can help heal others.

Culturally Competent: Cultural competence is a very important aspect to gaining and maintaining rapport with clients. With a culturally competent framework, my goal is to train emerging licensed therapists to work with clients in a culturally sensitive and informed manner.

Counseling Supervision Approach

I believe in goal oriented clinical supervision. Of course, gaining the necessary supervised hours is a goal that most emerging therapists have. However, I believe that experience refines effective counselors into exemplary ones!

The purpose of clinical supervision is to increase the supervisee’s effectiveness and competence. I go a step further by helping increase your ethical knowledge and cultural competence. My approach is to serve in the following roles as your supervisor:

  • Educator

  • Sponsor

  • Coach

  • Counselor

  • Director

As the supervisee, you are in an important role by working collaboratively with me and fulfilling the following roles:

  • Openness to learn, grow, and work collaboratively.

  • Work with clients directly.

  • Provide necessary documentation.

  • Availability for regular (virtual) consultation.

Counseling Background

I have worked in the field of mental health for over 20 years. I began my journey as an intern at the Bowie State University Counseling and Student Development Center in 1997 and emerged to work at the University of Maryland College Park as a counselor with the TRIO programs. In 1999 I became a school psychologist with the District of Columbia Public School System. In 2016 I founded Synergy Wellness Therapeutic Services and worked with children, adults and families in the private practice environment. I am currently a school psychologist with the Charles County Public School System in Maryland.
